How to Season Edamame
Every time we have sushi for dinner, we always get an order of edamame as an appetizer. They are usually the same, just simply steamed with a bit of salt and served with ordinary soy sauce. Nothing spectacular but they are good, nevertheless. This recipe has a little spice and zest that will make your taste buds do a little dance.
I added little jazz to those simple bean pods with soy for salt, Chile oil for spice, lime and mandarin zest for citrus and sesame seeds and oil for nuttiness. I added a dash of course sea salt for an extra salty crunch. When you are looking for a salty, spicy and zesty snack or appetizer to share, this one is a hit. It is a tasty, delicious, and super simple edamame appetizer recipe to make.
How to Cook Edamame
BOIL: Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the frozen edamame pods and bring back to a boil. Cook until bright green about 3 to 5 minutes. Drain water and transfer the pods to mixing bowl.
MICROVAWE: Place the frozen edamame pods into a microwave-safe dish with about ¼ cup water, cover partly and microwave on high until bright green, 2 to 5 minutes, depending on your microwave power.
STEAM: Bring about two cups of water to a boil in a pot. Place the frozen edamame pods in a colander or steam basket. Once the water is boiling, add the edamame pods to the pot and cover. Steam the edamame until they are heated through and become bright green, about 6 to 8 minutes
Spicy Edamame Appetizer Recipe
INGREDIENTS for THIS RECIPE
frozen edamame in the pod - use store bought frozen edamame. They are available in the frozen section at most grocery stores. They have shelled too which are perfect for veggie bowls or hummus. For this appetizer, we prefer them in pods.
soy sauce – you can use low sodium, if you prefer.
sesame seeds – white sesame seeds work great for this recipe. I mixed white and black since I had both and I love the contrast. You can slightly toast the sesame seeds for an extra toasty flavor.
mandarin zest – regular orange zest will do if you don’t have mandarins.
sesame oil – adds a toasty sesame flavor, I don’t have a substitution for this flavor. If you do not have sesame oil, you can omit it.
lime zest – adds a strong tangy flavor that’s similar to its juice. Limes are very distinct in flavor and aroma. You can substitute lime zest with lemon zest if you don’t have limes.
Chile oil – this is where the spice comes in. Add a little a time to get the level of spice you prefer. Chile oil tends to have a good amount of heat and a little can go a long way.
coarse sea salt – optional, just a dash for extra bite of crunchy salt flavor.
