The spread is in the cookie dough as well as in the finished cookie. These cookie sandwiches will satisfy your chocolate-hazelnut craving. The best part, you can make these year-round. The cookie dough can be cut into any shape you like.

These fun and festive cookies are really chocolate sandwich cookies with Nutella. To be more fancy, we can call them Nutella Linzer Cookies. The coconut is optional. We used it a as a fun way to mimic snow since we made these cookies in December as part of our Christmas cookie platter.

Things to bake with Nutella

If you haven’t baked with Nutella, I would say to you to “start now”. We grew up eating Nutella sandwiches and that all I knew about Nutella or just literally eating out of the jar. Which, I still do on occasion.

Years ago, I discovered that baking with Nutella has endless possibilities, especially around the winter holidays. But don’t limit yourself to seasonal baking when it comes to this divine chocolate hazelnut spread.

Ingredients for this Recipe

Chocolate Hazelnut Cookies with Nutella

For the Cookie Dough

1 cup all-purpose flour

¾ cup Nutella Hazelnut Spread

One egg – room temperature

1 tablespoon cocoa powder

1 tablespoon coffee liqueur

One teaspoon vanilla extract

For Filling and Decorating

1 cup Nutella hazelnut spread

¼ fine unsweetened coconut flakes – optional

Sprinkles or sugar – optional

How to make Chocolate Snowflake Sandwich Cookies

Cookie Dough

Place flour and cocoa ponder into a large mixing bowl and whisk together.

Place Nutella, egg, coffee liqueur and vanilla extract into a mixing bowl and mix until well combined.

Combine the dry and wet ingredients and mix until dough is formed.

Form the dough into a round disc.

Wrap dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

When Ready to Bake

Preheat oven to 350°.

Remove dough from refrigerator and roll out on slightly floured surface to about ¼ inch thickness.

Cut out cookie shapes.

Place cookies on parchment lined baking sheet and bake for about 7-9 minutes. Baking depends on size of the cookies. If making small cookies check at 7 minutes. The edges should look baked and slightly darker.

Remove from oven and let cool completely.

Once cooled, spread a generous amount of Nutella hazelnut spread onto a cookie and add another cookie on top to make a sandwich. Dab a bit of Nutella onto the edge of the cookies and roll in coconut. Use the Nutella spread to act as glue if adding sprinkle or other decorations.
