Different types of pies include cream, fruit, custard and savory. Savory pies are a type of pastry dish that contains cooked meat, poultry, seafood or vegetables in a thick sauce. Some popular examples of this type of dish include pot pies, quiche and Sheppard pie.

Do you prefer fruit or nut pies? Would you rather eat a slice of pie or a hand-held pie? Is sweet or savory your preference? Did you know that the original pie was made with meat, so savory pies are not excluded from the celebrations. So many options, we could eat a different pie every day for a week and not get bored!

January 23 is National Pie Day – The History

National Pie Day is an annual event that is celebrated on January 23rd each year. This special day was started in the mid-1970s by Boulder, Colorado’s own nuclear engineer, brewer and teacher Charlie Papazian who declared his own birthday, January 23, to be National Pie Day.

National Pie Day is proudly sponsored by the American Pie Council. The history of National Pie Day goes back even further, as the tradition of eating pie dates back centuries to ancient civilizations.

Throughout history, pies have been a staple of many cultures, from the savory pies of England to the sweet fruit pies of America. In fact, pies were so popular in medieval times that they were even served at banquets and other social events.

Today, people all around the world continue to enjoy this classic dessert, often sharing their favorite recipes and traditions with family and friends. So whether you prefer a classic apple pie or a more exotic flavor, National Pie Day is the perfect occasion to celebrate all things pastry.
