Tequila comes in several varieties – blanco, añejo, reposado, and joven – that can be explored and enjoyed by connoisseurs and beginners alike.

And don’t forget – tequila isn’t just for sipping. It pairs great with food, too! Find the perfect meal to complement your favorite tequila.

History of Tequila

Tequila was first created in the 16th century in the town of Tequila, situated in the state of Jalisco. The state of Jalisco is the largest area that produces tequila with the seal of approval from Mexico. The Marquis of Altamira was the first to initiate the production of tequila by building a distillery. Blue Weber Agave (agave azul) was the variety of agave used to make tequila in the beginning and is still used today.

The ancient Aztecs were the first to make use of the agave plant to create a beverage known as pulque. This fermented sap of the agave was consumed for both religious and ceremonial purposes.

But when the Spanish conquerors arrived in Mexico, they created their own version of pulque, called mezcal. This distilled version of agave sap quickly gained popularity among the Spanish settlers. Excitingly, many enjoy mezcal to this day!

Types of Tequila

Blanco or Silver Tequila – A less intense tequila, is the blanco or silver tequila. It’s clear in color and has a slightly sweet flavor, making it perfect for use in cocktails like margaritas.

Reposado Tequila – If you’re looking for something with a bit more complexity, then reposado tequila could be your new favorite. Aged for at least two months in oak barrels, reposado tequila has a mellower flavor than blanco and can be used in a variety of mixed drinks.

Añejo Tequila – A tequila that’s been aged to perfection. Añejo tequila is an undeniably luxurious type of tequila that’s been aged for at least one year in oak barrels. It has a rich, smooth flavor that’s sure to tantalize your taste buds when enjoyed neat or on the rocks.

Extra Añejo Tequila – the ultimate tequila experience. Extra añejo tequila is a type of tequila that’s been aged to perfection for at least three years in oak barrels. It has a very smooth flavor that’s perfect for sipping neat or on the rocks.
