What Makes the Pioneer Woman Baked Beans Special?

The Pioneer Woman, also known as Ree Drummond, is famous for her delicious and approachable recipes. Her take on baked beans is no different.

The Pioneer Woman Baked Beans recipe turns traditional simple canned baked beans into a divine baked side dish that serves a crowd with just a few additional ingredients. This recipe creates more jazzed up flavor, as the beans slowly cook, and the flavors of the other ingredients meld together.

Another standout feature of this recipe is the addition of extra bacon. The smoky and savory flavor of bacon adds a delicious depth to the dish. Plus, who doesn’t love beans and bacon?

The Pioneer Woman also adds a more sweetness to her baked beans. Brown sugar gives the dish a slightly sweet and sticky glaze, balancing out the smoky and savory flavors. This combination of flavors creates a perfect harmony that you will enjoy.

NOTE: We cut down the brown sugar in this recipe, originally the recipe calls for 1/2 cup brown sugar, we used a 1/4 cup of brown sugar. The can of baked beans and BBQ sauce already contain sugar and we prefer less sweeter beans. We also added two cloves of minced fresh garlic, for additional flavor, and it worked well.

Ingredients:

  • 8 slices bacon, halved or quartered
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 large cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1/2 medium green pepper, chopped
  • 3 (28-oz.) cans pork and beans (your favorite brand)
  • 3/4 cups barbecue sauce (use your favorite brand)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons dry mustard or 2 tablespoons. Dijon mustard

How to Make the Pioneer Woman Baked Beans

Follow this step-by-step guide to help you recreate this delicious dish:

    1. Position the oven rack in the lower-middle setting and preheat the oven to 325°F.
    2. In a large, deep sauté pan, fry the bacon until it is partially cooked and has released approximately 1/4 cup of fat. Then, remove the bacon from the pan and let it drain on paper towels.
    3. Place the onion, garlic, and pepper into the pan with the drippings and sauté until they are tender, about 5 minutes.
    4. Add the beans and the rest of the ingredients to the pan and bring it to a simmer. If the pan is too small, heat the beans until they simmer, then transfer them to a large bowl and mix in the remaining ingredients.
    5. Transfer the seasoned beans into a greased 13-by-9-inch (or similar size) ovenproof dish. Layer with bacon on top, and then bake until the beans are bubbling, and the sauce has thickened, approximately 2 hours. Cool the beans for about 20 minutes to allow the sauce to thicken before serving.

These baked beans are the perfect side dish for any barbecue, potluck, or family gathering. They pair well with grilled meats or burgers.

NOTE: This recipe makes about 15 servings, and it was created for large crowds or parties. Save the recipe for when you are hosting or going to a party or barbeque.

Customizing The Pioneer Woman Baked Beans

While The Pioneer Woman Baked Beans recipe is delicious on its own, there are simple ways to customize it to suit your preferences. Here are a few ideas:

    • Add some heat: If you like spicy food, consider adding a touch of cayenne pepper or diced jalapeños to give the baked beans some spice.
    • Try different toppings: Sprinkle some grated cheese or chopped green onions on top of the baked beans for added flavor and visual appeal.
    • Make it vegetarian: If you prefer a vegetarian version, simply omit the bacon and use vegetarian baked beans.

    Tips

Type of Bacon to Use: For baked beans, any type of bacon strips will work well, although avoid using Canadian bacon. Thick-cut bacon is the best choice for these beans. If available, peppered thick-cut bacon from your grocery store would work great.

Make Ahead: This recipe allows for the baked beans to be made the night before. However, for the bacon topping to be crispy, we suggest adding it to the dish just before you bake and serve it.

Leftover Storage: Place any leftovers in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for two to three days. To reheat: simply place the leftovers into an oven safe dish to reheat it in the oven, or microwave smaller serving portions.
