How to Make Oven Dried Figs
How to Make Oven Dried Figs – Figs are a delicious and nutritious fruit that can be enjoyed fresh or dried. Drying figs is a great way to preserve their sweet and unique flavor for longer periods of time. While there are various methods to dry figs, using an oven is a quick and convenient option.
Oven dried figs make a great snack on their own or you can add them to salads or use them a cocktail garnish. We used these oven dried figs as a unique garnish on our Fig Sour Cocktail.
Step 1: Selecting the Right Figs
Start by choosing ripe figs that are firm and free from any blemishes or signs of spoilage. It’s important to use fresh figs to ensure the best results in terms of taste and texture.
Step 2: Preparing the Figs
Wash the figs thoroughly under cool running water to remove any dirt or debris. Pat them dry with a clean kitchen towel. Next, remove the stems from each fig and cut them lengthwise making sure they are the same thickness. This will help to speed up the drying process and ensure even drying.
Step 3: Preheating the Oven
Preheat your oven to 225°F. This low temperature will allow the figs to slowly dehydrate without cooking or burning them.
Step 4: Arranging the Figs
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent the figs from sticking. Place the fig slices on the prepared baking sheet, making sure they are evenly spaced and not touching each other. This will allow for proper air circulation and even drying.
Step 5: Drying in the Oven
Place the baking sheet with the figs in the preheated oven. Keep the oven door slightly ajar to allow moisture to escape during the drying process. Bake for about 20-25 minutes.
The exact drying time may vary depending on the size and moisture content of the figs, so it’s important to keep an eye on them and check for doneness periodically.
Step 6: Testing for Doneness
To test if the figs are dry, remove one from the oven and allow it to cool for a few minutes. Gently press the fig with your fingers. If it feels leathery and there is no moisture oozing out, then it is properly dried. If it still feels soft or sticky, return it to the oven for further drying.
Step 7: Cooling and Storing
Once the figs are fully dried, remove them from the oven and let them cool completely on the baking sheet. As they cool, they will become even more firm and chewy.
Once cooled, transfer the dried figs to an airtight container or a resealable bag. Store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Properly stored dried figs can last for several weeks.
Step 8: Enjoying Oven Dried Figs
Dried figs make a delicious and healthy snack on their own. They can also be used in various recipes, such as baked goods, salads, or added to yogurt and oatmeal. Get creative and explore different ways to incorporate dried figs into your meals and snacks.
